Where the mind is without fear
and the head is held high;
and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been
broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;
broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has
not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by thee
into ever-widening thought and action—
into ever-widening thought and action—
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father,
let my country awake.
let my country awake.
- Rabindranath Tagore (Gitanjali)
This poem by guru Rabindranath Tagore has become most relevant today - when a government elected democratically - is bent upon curbing every Indian's freedom, where the state has miserably failed to provide safety and security to its citizens, where there is chaos all around, where corruption, theft, murders, rapes - every crime you can think off is the order of the day, where the rich and the powerful are beyond the law, where the poor are continued to be suppressed ---- it is time my country awakes
